The Tale of Sairin is a story of vain kirin called Sairin, referenced in The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Wind.
Long ago, a kirin called Sairin desired the hair of the nyosen, not caring that her hair in her human form would become her mane when she shifted into her kirin form. Sairin would put oil in her hair and pin it up with many colorful hairpins. One day a storm cloud appeared, she shifted to her kirin form so she could return to the palace where she resided on Mt. Hou. However, she had forgotten about the hairpins holding her mane back, which strained her neck when she changed forms. From that day on, it was said that she was never able to hold her head up straight.
